60 Solutions Against Climate Change - Alliance Française Johannesburg
From 19 May to 4 June 2016, the Alliance Française of Johannesburg in partnership with Agence Française de Développement will host “60 SOLUTIONS against climate change” exhibition, based on 21 photos by Yann Arthus-Bertrand (GoodPlanet Foundation).
While countries of the world are signing Paris agreement about climate, AFD and the GoodPlanet Foundation are using images to highlight innovative and effective solutions combining the fight against climate change and economic development in AFD’s 72 agencies worldwide.
The exhibition comprises 21 photos by Yann Arthus-Bertrand from his famous “Earth from Above” series and presents concrete initiatives in four sectors: cities, agriculture, energy transition and climate change adaptation.
AFD, a major and innovative international actor in climate finance
In line with its Climate Strategy, AFD uses a wide range of financial tools (investment loans, budget support, guarantees, equity or grant investments and technical assistance) to finance positive and realistic solutions to combat climate change. It benefits from and mobilizes resources from European and international mandates. Among the initiatives presented in this exhibition by actors from both the North and South, 15 are supported by AFD and illustrate the wide range of financing in all the countries where AFD operates.
Agence Française de Développement (AFD), a public financial institution that implements the policy defined by the French Government, works to combat poverty and promote sustainable development. AFD operates on four continents via a network of 72 offices and finances and supports projects that improve living conditions for populations, boost economic growth and protect the planet.
In 2014, AFD earmarked EUR 8.1bn to finance projects in developing countries and for overseas France. These AFD-financed projects will provide schooling for children, improve maternal health, promote gender equality, support farmers and small businesses, and bolster access to drinking water, transportation and energy. These newly-funded projects will also help mitigate climate change by saving nearly 3.3 million metric tons of carbondioxide-equivalent annually.
The GoodPlanet Foundation, chaired by Yann Arthus-Bertrand, seeks to raise public awareness of ecology, making it a central issue, and to promote living together. It wants to create a desire to move positively in this direction.
