Rio+20
In less than a year, Brazil will host the UN Conference on Sustainable Development. This conference will be held in Rio de Janeiro from 4 to 6 June 2012, 20 years after the first Earth Summit. It was a turning point in the consideration of environmental issues at international level and the recognition of an integrated approach to sustainable development and the fight against poverty, particularly in its social and environmental dimensions.
This international event is essential for France and the European Union :

"Rio +20" is, firstly, a unique opportunity to present the project of a World Environment Organization (WEO)

We expect "Rio +20" to present a clear message in support of the green economy, concrete progress on the establishment of indicators, beyond GDP to measure the progress of societies

The conference is also expected to give the development its rightful place within the United Nations, by pushing for reform of the Commission on Sustainable Development, and possibly the Economic and Social Council
France is mobilizing in preparation for this conference, with all of the European Union and many developing countries that share these same concerns. It will pursue closely, especially in the G20 which deals with the important issue of global governance. The next step will be the submission of written contributions towards Rio+20 on November 1 to the UN Secretariat and a meeting on 31 January 2012 in Paris, on the expectations and the role of non-state actors in a new international environmental governance.
