Ambassador Barbier joins UNFPA visit to foundations supporting child-headed households [fr]
Along with UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) Country Representative, Dr. Julitta Onabanjo, and several other female envoys, Ambassador Elisabeth Barbier took part in a tour of Alexandra on 30 April 2013 focusing on foundations that work to support child-headed households. Ratang Bana (Love the Children) and the Leratong (Joy for One) Foundation work with some of the children who live in Alex without an adult guardian.
It is estimated that there are some 3.6 million orphaned children in South Africa, which makes the work of these organisations even more important. The dedication of the staff was inspiring to the visiting diplomats and the visit served to highlight the significance of civil society work in these crucial social issues.
