Ambassador Barbier visits the Sizanani Mentorship Programme [fr]

Ambassador of France to South Africa, HE Elisabeth Barbier, and Director of the French Development Agency in South Africa (AFD), Martha Stein-Sochas, visited the Sizanani Mentorship Programme on 2 April 2016.

The programme benefits high school pupils from five schools in Alexandra township in Johannesburg. The NGO works in partnership with St Mary’s School in Waverley to offer extra tuition to 260 high school pupils (Grade 10-12) every Saturday and over school holidays.

The Sizanani Mentorship Programme was started in 2007 by St Mary’s School and the Fondation RATP. The pupils receiving extra tuition are mentored by professionals and also receive career counselling (including job shadowing, internships etc.) and support with university and bursary applications and admissions.

In 2015, the programme had 90 mentors and 127 mentees – and the progamme achieved a 100 percent matric pass rate. Also in 2015, 22 pupils received bursaries for tertiary education.
