Cooperation in science and technology

1. Each scientific research programme is based on a periodic call for proposals published on the French Ministry for Foreign Affairs website and on that of the specific South African partner.

  • Protea: two-year joint research projects in any field (partner: NRF)
  • SAFe Water: networks in Water S&T by funding four-year projects (Partner: WRC)
  • SAFeTI: three-year joint projects of research, innovation and training in ICT (partner: Meraka Institute).

2. Three major French research councils are represented in South Africa:

  • Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS)
  • Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD)
  • French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD)

3. The French Institute in South Africa, Johannesburg (IFAS) is devoted to research in social sciences and humanities.

4. The Franco-South African Technological Institute for Electronics (F’SATIE), set up at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), is an institute that hosts a Master’s degree underwritten by both TUT and ESIEE, a French institute of research and innovation in the field of electronics and ICT.

5. The French Embassy presents French exhibitions in cooperation with South African science centres and is a regular partner of Sasol SciFest.

6. A Technology Watch, an overview of French research and technology, can be obtained by subscribing to a mailing list, or by writing to the Attaché for Science & Technology at : vincent.baron@diplomatie.gouv.fr .
