Death of Boutros Boutros-Ghali (Feb. 16) [fr]

Excerpts from the daily press briefing by Alexandre Giorgini, French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and international Development deputy spokesman (Paris, February 17th, 2016)

Death of Boutros Boutros-Ghali (Feb. 16) – Statement by Jean-Marc Ayrault, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development

I was extremely saddened to learn of the death of Boutros Boutros-Ghali, former Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, former UN Secretary-General and former Secretary-General of La Francophonie.

I would like to pay tribute to this tireless advocate for peace both in the service of his country, notably through the negotiation of the Camp David accords, and the international community through his decisive contribution to the renewal of the United Nations in the aftermath of the Cold War. I also want to pay tribute to this tremendous advocate for emancipation and understanding between peoples, who worked tirelessly to promote French language and culture.

With him, the international community, and especially Egypt, the country of his birth, to which he was a credit, has lost a courageous and determined statesman. At this painful time, I would like to express my deepest sympathy to his family, his friends and the Egyptian people.
