Development cooperation: meeting with EMG [fr]
On 4 March 2015, Ambassador Barbier met with the representatives of Environmental Monitoring Group (EMG) and visited one of EMG’s projects at Fairhills (Breede Valley), in the Boland area.
EMG is an independent, not-for profit organisation established in 1991 and based in Cape Town and Nieuwoudville. Its programmes aim at encouraging environmental practices that lead to a more human relationship with each other and the natural environment. The 12 months project funded through the Civil Society Development Fund focuses on raising awareness of rights amongst farm workers in the Western Cape through theater performances and radio programmes.
Fairhills is a fairtrade wine project that started in 2006 with the aim of creating revenue in order to support the farm workers and the people within the Fairhills community. The revenue generated through Fairtrade wine sales enables Fairhills to develop new occupational opportunities for the community, but also to enhance the infrastructure and to improve the basic living conditions.
The Ambassador had the opportunity to visit the Fairhills Day-Care centers and the Fairhills Lorraine Primary School, as well as the Fairhills computer centre, library and community hall. She also engaged with a group of female workers that is planning to develop a chicken farm at Fairhills in order to generate additional income.
