1) The Cooperation and Cultural Action Department, headed by a counsellor, includes five sectors, each under the responsibility of an attaché: Culture, French Language, Media, Governance and S&T.
2) Missions of each sector:
the Cultural Attaché is also the director of the French Institute in South Africa (IFAS) located in Johannesburg that is the embassy’s cultural agency. IFAS also includes a section devoted to research in the field of social sciences ;
the French Language Attaché provides support to the Alliance Française network, to universities willing to reinforce their French department and to administrations or companies willing to train their employees ;
the Media Attaché strengthens links between French and Southern African film industries and facilitates expansion of Francophone TV and broadcast ;
the Governance Attaché is in charge of the Civil Society Development Fund (FSD) which supports projects submitted, after call for proposal, by NGOs or local government entities ;
the Science & Technology Attaché strengthens links between researchers of both countries through bilateral programmes of joint research (Protea, SAFe Water, SAFeTI), supports capacity building and training, e.g. F’SATI (French South African Institute of Technology) and induces cooperation in new fields, e.g. innovation.
