Erasmus Mundus/Erasmus+ South Africa Pre-Departure 2015

This year’s pre-departure briefing for Erasmus in South Africa took place on Wednesday, August 12th at the University of Johannesburg. A full day event was organized by the EU Delegation Office in close cooperation with Erasmus Mundus students.

In addition to some of the 258 students and staff who have been accepted to European institutions, around 200 people attended the event, equipping the scholarship holders with useful information while also getting the opportunity to know other awardees, alumni and representatives from the EU member states as well as the partner institutions.

The French Embassy was delighted to gather around some of the 20 South African students that were selected to study in a French institution in the framework of Erasmus Mundus Action 1 (Joint Master or PhDs) or Action 2 (Bachelor, Master, PhD Degree or Staff Exchange).

The morning session was rather formal and ceremonial, as the awardees received presentations and speeches from Prof Ihron Rensburg (Vice-Chancellor, UJ), Ambassador Roeland van de Geer ( Head of EU Delegation to SA), Mr Franco Burgio (EACEA), Mr Brutus Malada (EU Delegation to SA), Ms Mandisa Cakwe (DHET) and Dr Pinkie Mekgwe (Director:International Affairs, UJ).

In the afternoon, the sessions were supported by Erasmus alumnae who prepared informal presentations, tips before departing and after arriving, as well as sharing experiences on good times in Europe. The awardees showed great enthusiasm by noting down information and asking countless questions throughout the presentations. At the end of the day, a friendly dinner was organized in Kingsway Campus, in presence of the EU member states.
