Exclusive sreening at the Alliance Française of Johannesburg [fr]

The movie entitled "Tracking the Timbuktu Manuscripts" was screened at the Alliance Française of Johannesburg on May 25, in the presence of French Ambassador to South Africa and Lesotho Elisabeth Barbier.

In April 2012, when jihadists took control of northern Mali, the rescue operation of the invaluable Timbuktu manuscripts made headlines and became a symbol of resistance against obscurantism. Tracking The Timbuktu Manuscripts sheds a light on the men and women, who at the risk of their lives, slipped illegally across borders with their treasure. Sought after and threatened by smugglers and thieves, their manuscripts are now the subjects of intense scrutiny. The film ultimately points out political and religious stakes in conflict ridden in Mali and sub-Saharan neighboring countries.

The screening was followed by a discussion with Jean Crépu, director of this movie, moderated by Adrien Delmas, scientific director of the French Institute of South Africa..
