France mobilized to help Haiti in wake of hurricane
Paris, 7 October 2016
Hurricane Matthew hit Haiti very hard on 4 and 5 October. It caused many casualties and a huge amount of damage.
The French President expresses his sympathy and support to the Haitian people, who have already suffered so much in recent years.
The Head of State has called for France to mobilize all the resources available to deploy emergency aid very quickly, in coordination with our European partners and the international community.
On 5 October, at the Haitian authorities’ request, a Falcon 50 belonging to the armed forces in Martinique carried out reconnaissance flights to assess the damage caused by the bad weather, particularly on infrastructure necessary for delivering humanitarian aid to the victims.
The most urgent thing is now to supply drinking water to the population and pre-empt health risks. A plane will be chartered to transport 60 armed forces emergency service personnel and 32 tonnes of equipment, including two water treatment stations, medical kits and humanitarian and first aid equipment. Two senior French firefighters are also going to Port-au-Prince today to support the Haitian authorities./.
