Governance Innovation Week at University of Pretoria

From 1 to 5 June 2015, the French agricultural research organization CIRAD co-organized the Governance Innovation Week at University of Pretoria (UP). The event gathered international scientists and thinkers, of which 10 French researchers.

From 1 to 5 June 2015, the Centre for the Study of Governance Innovation (GovInn) of the University of Pretoria hosted the third edition of the Governance Innovation Week. The event was co-organized by CIRAD, the French agricultural research and international cooperation organization working for the sustainable development of tropical and Mediterranean regions.

The 5-day conference was organized around six workshops linked to governance innovation, followed by bestselling authors keynote lectures. Workshops’ thematic ranged from EU environmental policy, inclusive development, alternative economic paradigms for the 21st century, to new trends in regionalism studies, cross-border movements in Sub Saharan Africa and inter-regional dynamics between EU and Africa. This latter topic was taken as an opportunity to launch the new European Studies Association in Sub-Saharan Africa (ESA-SSA).

The success of the conference was ensured by the diversity of the audience, not only gathering researchers and students from South African universities, but also representatives from international research institutions, private sector as well as government delegates (Water Research Commission, Department of Environmental Affairs, Agricultural Research Council).

Ten French researchers from CIRAD, AgroParisTech and Sciences Po, were offered the opportunity to depict their research projects and visions on political and economic development. The Director of the Scientific Department "Environment and Societies" at CIRAD, Alain Billand, visited the GovInn team to attend the workshop and prepare the signing of a formal agreement between CIRAD and the University of Pretoria, with the aim to endorse the two institutions’ collaboration.
