The AFD, very active in affordable and social housing in French overseas territories and all around the world, has implemented several projects to help creating new stocks of housing units and facilitating access for lower income groups in South Africa. AFD extended a 150 million rand loan to AFHCO for the development of “communal housing” (en-suite kitchen and shared ablutions) targeting households who earn less than 7,000 rands per month. With this funding, AFHCO is developing two buildings: Atkinson House and Platinum Place, accounting for more than 1,000 communal housing units for approximately 2.200 beneficiaries in Johannesburg inner-city.

AFHCO has been active as an affordable housing developer in Johannesburg inner-city since 1996. AFHCO’s key strategy in growing its portfolio value has been the upliftment of precincts and communities around its buildings, in order to make previous no-go areas into sought-after residential nodes. A spin off of this strategy has been a general rehabilitation of the Johannesburg inner-city with both Council and growing competition playing a key role.

Trevor Fowler, City Manager de Johannesburg, and Renney Plit, AFHCO’s CEO, also delivered speeches during the inauguration.
