"La Main à la Pâte" 2014 Event [fr]

To present the La Main à la Pâte (LAMAP) project in South Africa and to award certificates to teachers and trainers, the French Embassy and the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) organised a cocktail function at the Residence of French Ambassador Elisabeth Barbier, on 16 October 2014.

In addition to the presence of the project stakeholders (ASSAf, teachers from schools, UP professors, Gauteng department of education, etc.), the event will gather guests from the Department of Basic Education, the Department of Science and Technology and representatives of South African provinces.

LAMAP is a French model of Inquiry-Based Science Education meaning “hands in the dough”. This approach is aimed at improving the quality of science teaching and learning. Children are encouraged to investigate the subject being taught by experimenting and asking questions rather than undergoing the traditional vertical approach. Its advantage is that it develops language, scientific and critical thinking skills in an integrated way within the context of science from an early age. There is a strong emphasis on reasoning and explaining, both verbally and in writing.


The benefits of teaching such skills to children from a young age are enormous, not only because they have greater access to scientific careers but also because they are better equipped to participate fully and critically as citizens in a democratic country.

LAMAP is an initiative of the French Academy of Sciences and was first implemented in pilot primary schools in 1996. Its success has been immediate and LAMAP was officially incorporated in the national French curricula in 2002. It is now being extended to high schools and internationally, with some 50 countries worldwide now partners of LAMAP.

The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), in partnership with the French Academy of Sciences, and with the support of the national and provincial departments of education launched a 2-year pilot phase of LAMAP at grade 4 level in selected primary schools in Gauteng representative of the national diversity.
The project launch and the first training of South African trainers took place in November 2012 in the frame of the French season in South Africa.


The third and the last training session to be conducted by French trainers, took place from 13 to 17 October 2014 in Lyttleton Primary School (Centurion). The pilot phase will be assessed during this session, the goal being to generalize the programme to all schools and provinces from 2015 onwards.
