France paid a final tribute to Nelson Mandela at his funeral service on Sunday 15 December 2013 in Qunu, the village where he spent his childhood in the Eastern Cape province.
Lionel Jospin and Alain Juppé, former Prime Ministers of the French Republic, accompanied by H.E. Elisabeth Barbier, Ambassador of France in South Africa, attended the ceremony along with the leader of the fight against apartheid’s family and high-level guests from all over the world. The funeral will be remembered in particular for the moving speeches by Mandela’s closest friends.

Mr Jospin and Mr Juppé jointly signed the Condolence Book at the Union Buildings.

In Paris, the Eiffel Tower was illuminated on December 14th and 15th with "NELSON MANDELA 1918-2013" written in bright letters on the 1st floor and 5 light beams in colours of the South African flag moving over the Eiffel Tower.
