Launch of the Francophonie Festival in Pretoria and Johannesburg

On 12 March 2016, the Alliance Française in Pretoria launched the Festival de la Francophonie

The annual Francophonie Festival is hosted for embassies, institutions, Francophone people and Francophiles for the promotion of French cultural and linguistic diversity. The festival is a great way to learn about other cultures and explore the creative artistry of the many countries that speak French.

In 2016, participating countries in Pretoria include Belgium, Benin, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroun, Canada, Comoros, Congo Brazzaville, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, Mali, France, Gabon, Guinea, Lebanon, Madagascar, Niger, RDC, Seychelles, Senegal, Switzerland, and Tunisia.

Ambassador of France to South Africa opened the Festival de la Francophonie on 12 March 2016.

The day was filled with diverse cultural activities : traditional dances from Bulgaria and Burundi, dance “Faux Lion” by Senegal, a choir performance by the Ecole Française, etc. Most of the countries present showcased some of their local products and food.

Until March 24, there will be cultural evenings with film screenings, theatre plays, cuisine, etc. at the Alliance Française Pretoria. View the full programme here :

On the evening of 12 March, Ambassador Barbier attended Africa Chic ! - an event organised by the Alliance Française in Johannesburg, the French Institute in South Africa and the Good Luck Bar (at The Sheds on 1 Fox Street). This evening was dedicated to the beautiful sounds and garments of (not-only) French-speaking Africa. Takalo, Les Fantastiques and Femi Koya performed on The Good Luck Bar stage. Hundreds of people attended this musical evening.

The French evening, on 14 March 2016 at the Alliance Française Pretoria, was also a great success. The Ambassador of France opened the evening with a speech followed by a performance by Takalo, from South Africa and Madagascar with Louis Mhlanga (guitar, vocals) and Régis Gizavo (accordion, vocals). The evening ended with a cocktail offered by the French Embassy in South Africa.
