STATEMENT BY BERNARD KOUCHNER MINISTER OF FOREIGN AND EUROPEAN AFFAIRS
On 11 February 1990, the entire world was moved by Nelson Mandela’s release. Rooted in the quest for freedoms and human rights, his work has since then inspired Africa and the entire world.
A visionary statesman, a fervent champion of freedom, Nelson Mandela is also an eternal citizen and servant of Africa, motivated by a duty to humanity.
Every time I have met him, I have found a generous, passionate man. Guided by his convictions, he has become the symbol of the reconciliation policy that enabled the South African people to learn to live together.
