New central power stations in Northern Cape province [fr]
On February 24th, 2014, Ambassador Barbier was in Douglas (Northern Cape), where she visited two solar power stations built by Sunpower, a subsidiary of Total group.
These two solar farms, Greefspan and Herbet, were developed in the framework of the first phase of production of renewable electricity within the Independent Producer Program (IPP). They have a production output of 11MW (92 000 solar panels) and 22MW (138 000 solar panels) respectively.
In the construction phase, the two yard areas mobilized around 300 people each. French expertise was provided for the implementation, especially at the early stage of the project development cycle, through the help of French engineers who came from France for a few weeks. After the launch of the power stations, each site is managed by 15 persons.
Sunpower has been preselected to produce a third 86MW power-station near the city of Prieska (Northern Cape province).
South Africa benefits from radiation intensity twice that of Europe, which explains why French firms are interested to develop the solar sector in the country. French industries have already been chosen to accompany the development of 6 projects within the framework of the IPP.
