Short courses for French language professionals [fr]

The Embassy of France in South Africa, in partnership with the French Institute, the Alliance française Delegation in Southern Africa, and the CIEP (Centre international d’Etudes pédagogiques) offered a training course for French language professionals. The course ran from 9 to 13 May 2016, in Cape Town.

Each year the CIEP, based in Sèvres, France, offers the internationally recognised regional university BELC (Bureau d’enseignement de la langue et de la civilisation française à l’étranger) winter and summer schools. BELC is devoted to the teaching profession, and its training course is a major event in the continuing education of language professionals. Since 2012, these BELC training courses have decentralised to meet the needs of a particular geographic area.

The course in Cape Town was the first on the African continent.

This intensive five-day training course hosted 100 participants (Alliances françaises, local educational institutions, French schools) working in the Southern Africa and Indian Ocean regions, and offered nine training modules, round table discussions and cultural activities.

All training were delivered by experts in the field of teaching French as a foreign language, including CIEP’s partners, who specialise in teaching French for specific purposes, teaching French to children, working with new pedagogical technology, and management. At the end of the training, a certificate was issued by the CIEP to all participants.

The Ambassador of France to South Africa, Elisabeth Barbier, delivered a speech at the closing ceremony of the BELC school, before handing over the certificates to the participants.

The courses was complemented by opportunities for participants to get to know each other, including cultural evenings, meetings with the partners of the publishing world, as well as a welcoming ceremony that were attended by the Ambassador of France in South Africa and local partners in the field of language education.
