Smadj - Tour in South Africa
SMADJ Smadj « Oud Solotronic » South Africa tour October 2016
Born in Tunisia, Jean-Pierre Smadja aka Smadj grew up listening to oriental music, but also funk, soul, Brazilian and folk music. He released his first album in 1994, but reached international recognition with his second album “Equilibriste” in 2000, an album where he blends acoustic and electric sounds. The album was ranked 4th at the European World Music Charts. In 2002, his next album “Wild Serenade”, produced with Franco-Algerian composer Mehddi Haddab, brought to the 21st century an old instrument - the Arabian lute and was awarded best album of the year at the prestigious BBC World Music Awards.
Since then, Smadj has had a number of successful collaborations with great international artists : Turkish percussionist Burhan Öçal, Malian singer and composer Rokia Traoré, Malian kora master Ballaké Sissoko, Anglo-Egyptian singer Natacha Atlas and French jazz pianist Laurent de Wilde to name but a few.
« Oud Solotronic » traverses Smadj’s approach to new music through a repertoire taken from all his albums - some unpublished. From classical Arabic lute and Turkish taksims, compositions open in the style of the masters, move to more electric and modern moods, and close with the modernity of the electric oud. Smadj offers a solo repertoire for his African tour but aims to travel the world, inviting local musicians to every concert and capturing these collaborations on video and sound... After a year, he plans to present a multimedia travelogue with video, sounds, weblog…
