So Chef! Celebrating French cuisine

9-22 October 2016: Cape Town, Durban, East London, Johannesburg, Maseru, Port Elizabeth and Pretoria


The French network in South Africa and Lesotho will celebrate French gastronomy with So Chef! from the 9th to the 22nd of October 2016. Diarise these dates, celebrate with us the diversity of French cuisine and share some recipes with the Chefs!

So Chef! brings French know-how with local produce and celebrates food with everyone. Following the success of last year’s edition, So Chef! is coming back to Southern Africa with four top Chefs from Alsace, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, and Reunion Island, who will travel to South Africa and Lesotho to take part in gastronomic experiences in 7 cities.

So Chef! partnering with the Department of Basic Education National Nutrition Week

In celebrating National Nutrition week the Department of Basic Education is teaming up with the French Institute of South Africa to give SA learners a taste of French cuisine. This exciting gastronomy adventure forms part of a partnership agreement with the French Embassy in South Africa for collaboration and cooperation in promoting nutrition education in schools.

The theme for this year’s National Nutrition Week (NNW) under the 2016 theme “Love your beans – eat dry beans, peas and lentils!!” It is aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles and to demonstrate culinary skills during workshops for learners as part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Embassy of France.

This will enhance the already existing efforts of the DBE through the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) which aims to enhance the learning capacity of learners through the provision of a healthy meal at schools. Where it is implemented, the programme has shown to improve punctuality, regular school attendance, concentration and the general wellbeing of participating learners. Whilst learners are being provided with nutritious meals, they are also
taught to establish and maintain good eating and lifestyle habits for life. Nutrition Education also provides educators with resource materials to support curriculum and to make every school a healthy school.

So Chef! brings a piece of Bourgogne and Reunion Island to local foodies

The Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Region is one of the 13 metropolitan French
Provinces. As part of its international policy, it has developed a long-term and cross-sector partnership with the Western Cape Province, mainly in the fields of agriculture, professional training, youth development, culture and economic development. Since 2014, it supports the development of trainer and student exchanges between the catering school of Lycée Le Castel (Dijon) and partners from TVET colleges in the Western Cape and the JHB Culinary and Pastry School. Lycée Le Castel welcomes and trains over 2,000 students where everyone can taste the local dishes and pastries.

Located in the Mascarene Archipelago, Reunion Island – a French overseas
department – offers travelers the exoticism of a tropical island in the Indian Ocean. At the crossroads of European, African and Asian cultures, Reunion is a true melting pot. Le Centhor is a school from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Reunion Island, funded by Europe and the Reunion Island Region. For the last 24 years, the school gives training in the hotel business, catering and tourism. Its Masters Classes are conducted by renowned speakers with great expertise.

people of all ages, with workshops organised in schools and universities; workshops for selflearners in the Alliances Française network and cooking schools; and 4-handed gastronomic dinners (2 Chefs, 1 menu) in partnering restaurants.
