On November 3 2016, the French Embassy in South Africa and the Small Development Agency (SEDA - agency of the Department of Small Business Development) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The objective of this MoU is to further the development of the partnership in business incubation and the development of innovative start-ups between France and South Africa.

The signing ceremony took place in Pretoria in presence of Mrs Elisabeth Barbier, French Ambassador to South Africa, and Mrs Mandisa Tshikwatamba, CEO of SEDA.

Since 2015, the French Embassy and SEDA have increased their cooperation. In March 2015, SEDA officials visited France in order to study the model of French incubators. In the same month, members of the French innovation network RETIS participated in the South African Business Incubation Conference.

SEDA now wants to go further and transform its incubators into incubators of innovative companies. The repeated exchanges between France and SEDA demonstrate the dynamism of France in the development of innovative companies. This has led SEDA to work closely with France.

This Memorandum of Understanding is a broad cooperation agreement which aims to implement different initiatives such as increasing the development of bilateral soft landings, facilitating study trips to France and supporting joint incubation programmes.
