The French network in SA prepares for COP21 [fr]


The French network in South Africa has organized and will participate in a wide variety of events about climate change or biodiversity, in preparation for COP21 which will be held in Paris from the 30th November to the 11th December 2015.

• 2nd October 2015: Generation Earth Youth Summit - Sandton

The Generation Earth Youth Summit took place at the Sandton Convention Center in Johannesburg. This “Youth Summit” for climate gathered together hundreds of South African high school pupils who sprang into action to find solutions for environmental problems. The Embassy of France in South Africa took part in this event and presented the priorities for the upcoming COP21 conference and the high stakes of environmental negotiations in general.


• 4th – 7th October 2015 : International conference dedicated exclusively to renewables (SAIREC) - Cape Town International Convention Center

The International conference dedicated exclusively to renewables (SAIREC) is an international conference dedicated exclusively to renewables. It is attended by government ministers, high-level decision makers, experts, specialists and thought leaders, as well as private sector stakeholders and civil society to discuss and exchange their vision, experiences, and solutions to accelerate the global increase in the use of renewable energy.

SAIREC will provide a platform to address energy security and access. Under the theme Empowering Africa, SAIREC will demonstrate why Africa is a key business destination for the renewable energy sector.
France will be represented by Marie-Hélène Aubert, adviser in charge of climate and environment for the French Republic.
The French Development Agency (AFD) will speak during the Investor Forum, which will take place on 4 October. It is organized by SANEDI (The South African National Energy Development Institute) and CTI PFAN (Climate Technology Initiative Private Financing Advisory Network), to present AFD’s experience in financing renewables in Africa.

Access to the conference is free but registration is compulsory.


• 9th October 2015 : Speech during the Pan-African Parliament session (PAP) – Midrand (Gallagher Convention Center)

The Embassy of France in South Africa has been invited by the new Cameroonian President to give a speech about COP21 during the first ordinary session of the 4th legislature of the Parliament, which will take place from the 5 to 8 October 2015.

• 14th-16th October 2015 : First technical Southern Africa regional workshop for cities and local governments on the Durban Adaptation Charter (DAC) – LOCS4Africa - Durban (Greyville Exhibition and Conference Center)

This milestone event is organised and hosted by the eThekwini Municipality in partnership with ICLEI Africa (International Council for Local Environmental Initiative) and is convened under the auspices of the Local Climate Solutions for Africa Initiative (LOCS4Africa).

Primarily aimed at accelerating local climate action, the regional workshop will focus on capacity building for officials involved in planning for, implementing, reporting on, designing programs, and address climate change through the implementation of the Durban Adaptation Charter (DAC). Each day will consist of a number of plenary and parallel interactive sessions around key steps of the DAC and technical training sessions which will focus on climate change communication in the African context, in anticipation of a legally binding global climate agreement to be signed at COP21 in Paris in December 2015.

Through the support of the Embassy of France, five delegates from the National Association of Communes of Benin (ANBC), the Ouagadougou City Council (Burkina Faso), the Bafut City Council (Cameroon), the Dakar City Council (Senegal) and Ivory Coast Assembly of Regions and Districts (ARDCI) will be attending the conference.


• 14th October 2015, 6pm to 8pm – Movie projection as part of a visit to South Africa by the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development– Alliance Française of Pretoria

Within the framework of the event So Chef !, the Alliance Française of Pretoria and the French Research and Development Institute (IRD) have organized the screening of a movie, « Achieving Food Security in Africa » about agriculture and climate change. The French Agricultural Research Center for International Development (CIRAD) and Pretoria University will be represented.

• 15th October 2015 – Reception with the French-speaking delegates taking part in the LOCS summit - Alliance Française of Durban

As part of So Chef !, a reception will gather together the French community, representatives of the city of Durban and French-speaking delegates taking part in the LOCS summit.


• 19th October 2015 – Seminar about climate change organised by the French Development Agency (AFD)– Alliance Française of Cape Town

The aim of this conference is to discuss the effects of climate change on African cities and the strategies these cities have to adapt to deal with the consequences of climate change. The panel, chaired by the Regional Director of the French Agency for Development in Southern Africa, Martha Stein-Sochas, aims at creating a dialogue between representatives of the City of Cape Town, an international network of local collectivities (ICLEI) and academics from the University of Cape Town (UCT).

• 22th October 2015 : Event From COP17 to COP21 from Durban to Paris– Durban university of technology (DUT)

An event organised by European diplomatic missions in the presence of South African environmental experts and members of the diplomatic corps.

• 17th November 2015 : Colloquium : « Sustainable Cities and energetic efficiency in the building sector » – Johannesburg (OPEN, Maboneng)

The event, coordinated by Business France, aims to increase the value of the French offer in energy efficiency, green buildings and solutions aimed at making the housing and cities more eco-friendly. It also aims at promoting partnerships between French and South African companies. Representatives of the South African Government and of the South African Local Government Association have been invited to attend.

• 29th November – 2 December 2015 : 7th edition of Africités Summit – Johannesburg (Sandton Convention Centre)

The French Development Agency (AFD) will take part in the 7th edition of the Africités Summit, an international event organised by United Cities and Governments of Africa (CGLU Africa) taking place every three years in different regions of Africa.

The theme of this event is “Building the future of Africa with its population: the contribution of African regional authorities to the 2063 Program of the African Union”. It will gather together local and regional elected officials from the continent. The main objective is to get African cities talking about COP21.


• 8th and 9th December 2015 : Science Forum South Africa, organized by the Department of Science and Technology and the Council Of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) – Pretoria (CSIR)

In cooperation with the Cooperation Department of the Embassy of France, the joint office of the French National Centre for Scientific Research, the French Agricultural Research Center for International Development and the Institute of Research for Development, the event will promote projects organised by the French network ahead of COP21. During this event, there will be a stall, movie screenings about climate change and a presentation about Franco-South-African training centers (the International Centre for Education, Marine and Atmospheric Sciences over Africa - ICEMASA and the French South African Institute of Technology - F’SATI). The project Land Matrix, initiated by the center GovInn (University of Pretoria/CIRAD) will also be presented.
