The passing of Professor Tobias
On Wednesday 13 June the Embassy of France joined the University of the Witwatersrand and the wider South African academic community in mourning the passing of Professor Phillip Tobias. Ambassador Jacques Lapouge sent a letter of condolence on behalf of the Embassy and other academic partners in France to the University.
Ambassador Lapouge lauded Professor Tobias’ life of service and academic achievement and was particularly keen to highlight the principled and inspiring position taken by the Professor in opposition to Apartheid. In 1998 Professor Tobias was made “Commandeur de l’Ordre National du Mérite” (a prestigious French civilian honour) in recognition of his many achievements.
The Embassy of France regrets the loss of one of South Africa’s premier experts on the origin of mankind and again extends it’s most sincere condolences to the Professor’s family and colleagues.
