Visit of Aurora Wind Power site [fr]
On 27 February 2015, Ambassador Barbier visited Aurora Wind Power’s "West Coast One" site, a joint venture between GDF SUEZ (France), Investec Bank (RSA) and Kagiso Tiso Holdings (RSA).
The West Coast One project, launched in 2008, was one of the selected proposals made in the frame of the public programme Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers (REIPP). South Africa intends to produce 3,625 MW of renewable energy through this programme by the end of 2016 to help curb its reliance on coal for electricity and contribute towards reduced carbon emission objectives. The Government also wants to use the REIPP programme to ensure local communities benefit through employment opportunities and as shareholders in these renewable projects.Jobs were created during the construction and operation phases of the project, and Aurora Wind Power established education initiatives in the local community.
