Windfarming - Visit of the Sere project

South Africa, one of the largest emitter of greenhouse gases, is one of the first African countries to assign itself goals regarding electricity efficiency and renewable energy sources. Willing to reduce its environmental impact and to improve the satisfaction of electricity supply, the South African government aims to double the country’s energy capacity by 2030, of which renewable energy sources will account for 42%.

Working towards South Africa’s energy transition and developing renewable energy sources in the country’s energy production, AFD has been closely collaborating with national electricity operator Eskom. AFD participated in the funding of a 100MW wind farm, the SERE project, co-funded by the World Bank, the African Bank of Development and the Clean Technology Fund.

The wind farm should be fully operational by the end of the year.

This partnership falls into the French’s cooperation strategy in South Africa, centered on the funding of great economic infrastructures and the fight against climate change.
